ART IN THE PARK : SHUN SUDO "HANA-MI"

Introduction

Key visual of ‘ART IN THE PARK : SHUN SUDO “HANA-MI.”’ 2026.3.7 - 3.29.

What I painted were sceneries with a variety of flowers.

Scenes I have witnessed across the world, and the blossoms that stood in full glory within them.

Ordinary moments that will never return again.

Through paintings, I transform these fleeting instants etched into my mind into landscapes that endure forever.

I had been working with Ginza Sony Park in various ways even before its grand opening in 2025.

And each time, I felt it—a resonance with this place.

Connecting people with the city, and people with one another, through its activities and openness.

This is one of the things I too strive toward with my own art.

This art exhibition, held in collaboration with Ginza Sony Park, feels like an ambitious new endeavor in that sense as well.

In this Park of Ginza, where people gather from all over the world, I will create a space filled completely with paintings of flowers.

I wanted to express, in my own way, the beauty of hanami, Japan's cherished springtime tradition of viewing flowers.

It would make me truly happy if this landscape, that can be seen nowhere else, is able to move the hearts of the many people who visit Ginza. And if that movement of the heart can become a small source of energy to help someone live through the day, then there would be no greater happiness for me as a painter.

SHUN SUDO

Program

The Sony Building—the origin of Ginza Sony Park—once featured a public space called the "Garden in Ginza" (Sony Square), an area of 33 square meters where seasonal events were held so that passersby could enjoy the atmosphere of Ginza. Ginza Sony Park, which has carried forth this philosophy, will present a hanami-themed program timed to coincide with this spring's cherry blossom season, to give visitors a sense of the arrival of spring in Ginza.

* hanami is the traditional Japanese custom of appreciating sceneries filled with blooming cherry blossoms, primarily from late March through early April of each year. This practice of spending time feeling the arrival of spring, in the fleeting moments when the cherry blossom petals dance and fall through the air, is one that has long been cherished in Japan.

One of SHUN SUDO's Largest Exhibitions of New Works

This exhibition, which makes bold use of the Ginza Sony Park space, will feature over 35 new works—one of the largest presentations of new works in his career to date. These include the BUTTON FLOWER, which has become an iconic SHUN SUDO motif, as well as scenes of various flowers inspired by those he encountered during his travels around the world. Ever evolving his artistic style, SHUN SUDO has created a breathtaking space where flowers seem to be blowing in their full glory, with the hope that it will move the hearts of the many people who visit Ginza, becoming a small source of energy to help them live through the day.

*Works exhibited as part of this program, ART IN THE PARK: SHUN SUDO "HANA-MI," will be available for purchase. The exhibition will feature his latest works, and we invite you to experience them first at Ginza Sony Park.

SHUN SUDO

Born in Tokyo in 1977, contemporary artist SHUN SUDO is currently based in Tokyo. After traveling to the U.S. in his twenties, he journeyed around the world, teaching himself artistic techniques along the way. SUDO's artistic practice centers around painting, and is composed of a remarkably wide range of elements. These include elements inherited from Japanese and American pop and street culture—such as skateboarding, graffiti, manga, and anime—that shaped him deeply during his formative years; elements drawn from nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) and sumi-e (sumi ink painting), which developed within Japan and the broader East and are tied to his own roots; as well as elements drawn from past artistic movements and trends in the history of modern and contemporary art primarily in the West, including Impressionism and Fauvism.

In SUDO's work, these diverse elements coexist while retaining their distinctness, coming together in a strangely harmonious way. In this sense, his art embodies the potential of a new form of fine art that transcends the conventional binary between "high art" and "low art." At first glance, SUDO's paintings may appear to inherit the lineage of pop art. Yet he imbues his symbolic motif within this body of work, the BUTTON FLOWER, with a positive message. By combining this motif with a wide range of imagery, he aims to bring about positive change in society, using his distinctive perspective to incorporate an engagement with social transformation that has often been avoided in conventional pop art. While his earlier works centered primarily on acrylic painting characterized by clearly defined lines, SUDO in recent years has returned to oil painting, a medium he encountered briefly in his childhood. Guided by this singular sensibility, he is in the process of establishing an original style uniquely his own, exploring within oil painting expressions of color and line with a depth and spatial richness distinct from his acrylic works.
